Maybe you never got braces when you were younger or maybe you did, but you didn’t wear your retainer as much as you should have and you experienced orthodontic relapse. Whatever the reason, you want braces as an adult—but how much do they cost? Can you get them covered by insurance? Is it even worth it? Here are some of the most common questions we hear about the cost of braces for adults.
How much do adult braces cost?
The only way to know how much adult braces will cost for you is to schedule a consultation with an orthodontist. There are too many variables involved for us to be able to give patients precise figures for their treatment without seeing them in person.
One of the most important factors involved in the price of adult braces is the type of braces you choose. Options include:
Traditional Metal Braces
Cost: $3,000 to $7,000
Traditional braces involve placing stainless steel brackets on each tooth and attaching them to an archwire, which is bent and adjusted every few weeks to push and pull teeth into their proper positions. Many adults wish to avoid metal braces, but they do the job well and they’re economical, so if you can get past the aesthetics, they’re a worthwhile option to consider.
Ceramic Braces
Cost: $4,000 to $8,000
Ceramic braces work the same way as traditional metal braces, except tooth-colored ceramic brackets are used instead of stainless steel. Also known as clear braces, the brackets will blend in with the rest of your smile, making your braces less conspicuous, but the wire is still visible.
Lingual Braces
Cost: $8,000 to $10,000
Lingual braces must be custom-made for each patient, which is why the cost is higher than other options. These braces are attached to the backs of the teeth instead of the front, making them a good option for patients who want a discreet treatment option, but aren’t candidates for Invisalign.
Are adult braces covered by insurance?
Unfortunately, it’s rare for dental insurance plans to cover braces for adults, but there are some plans that do, particularly if braces are needed to correct functional or oral health issues and not simply a matter of aesthetics. Contact your insurance provider to learn about the coverage they offer. Our team is also happy to help you understand your benefits and answer any questions you might have.
Are there payment plans for adult braces?
Yes, at Signature Orthodontics, we offer affordable financing options through CareCredit and Lending Point. We also offer in-house interest-free payment plans. When you come in for your consultation, ask us for details.
If my child is getting orthodontic care at your practice, can I get a discount on my adult braces?
Absolutely! We offer a family discount for siblings and parents.
Are adult braces worth it?
Yes, adult braces are worth it. While you may want braces to improve the appearance of your smile, there are important oral health benefits to consider as well. Straighter teeth are easier to brush, floss, and keep clean, which means a lower risk of tooth decay and gum disease. A misaligned bite can lead to abnormal wear, causing teeth to become chipped or fractured. Braces can even improve breathing and TMJ pain in some patients.
